Growing up in the dusty streets of Khayelitsha is tough. Khayelitsha is one of biggest townships in Africa and it’s affected by poverty, crime, HIV /aids epidemic and high rates of unemployment. The environment we grew up under in Khayelitsha do not allow young man and woman to reach their potentials, they either resort to crime due to unemployment or either be come another victim of HIV/Aids. Even if you do make it to higher levels of higher education, you will always have an unsteady foundation, because of the background we carrier from the ravaged townships.
I’m proud of my self, because I'm close to my dreams and this is just the beginning of great things to come. It was not easy but it was worth it. It might have taken so much strength out of me but it has shaped my character. I consider my self lucky to have made it this far, because it could have been me who became a statistics of crime or HIV/Aids. I’m proud to say, some day I will go back to Khayelitsha and make sure I contribute and make a deference in some one’s life. To every young man and woman growing up in the townships, hold on to your dreams, together we will.
